At 45, I Said “No” to a Promotion and Won Back My Life

A Letter from Our Community

Dear Friends at Tao Zenith,

I am “Old Zhou,” a follower of yours for three years. Lighting incense before bed and consulting the yearly energy forecast have become my unshakeable habits. Today, I’m writing to share a story about how a middle-aged man found a way out by understanding the balance between “advancing” and “stopping.”

1. The Golden Handcuffs: A Temptation in 2025

A few months ago, in mid-2025, I faced the biggest temptation—and crisis—of my career.

Our Vice President left due to illness, leaving a core position vacant. My boss offered me a 50% salary increase and stock options, hinting that I was the top candidate. For a 45-year-old supporting elderly parents and young children, with a mortgage on my back, this was the “financial freedom” ticket I had dreamed of.

But I knew the cost. The position meant being stationed overseas, rarely seeing my family. It meant shouldering huge compliance risks. It meant my blood pressure and heart, already at their limits, would have to run on overdrive again.

For two weeks, I was trapped in deep anxiety. I wanted to fight for it but feared my body would collapse. I wanted to give up but feared being marginalized or called a “coward.” The greed of “wanting it all” kept me awake all night, and I even started losing hair from the stress.

2. The Awakening: Tao Te Ching Chapter 44

The turning point came when I re-read Tao Te Ching Chapter 44, which you quoted in a previous consultation: “Fame or Self: Which is dearer? Self or Wealth: Which is more? … Therefore, he who knows contentment shall suffer no disgrace; he who knows when to stop shall suffer no danger.”

These words struck me hard. Is reputation closer to me than my body? Is wealth more important than my life?

I thought of the former VP, only in his early 50s, now fighting for his life in the ICU. No matter how much money he earned, it all turned into medical bills. If I overdrew my life for that position and collapsed, to the company, I am just a replaceable part. But to my wife, daughter, and aging parents, the sky would fall.

At that moment, I understood “Knowing Contentment” (Zhi Zu). It isn’t about being lazy or lacking ambition. It is about having a clear self-awareness, knowing your limits to avoid the disaster caused by excessive greed.

3. The Decision: Knowing When to Stop

In the end, I made a decision that shocked everyone. I declined the promotion. Instead, I voluntarily asked to transfer to the After-Sales Department—a stable role with average returns but lower stress. Though surprised, my boss was actually relieved, as he had secretly worried about whether my health could handle the high pressure.

4. Spring 2026: Winning Back Control

Now, the spring of 2026 has arrived. I see the young colleague who took that position posting photos of airports at 3 AM and shouting about KPIs in the group chat. Meanwhile, I am sitting on my balcony, peeling an apple for my daughter who is about to take her high school entrance exams. Beside me is a pot of warm Aged White Tea with Tangerine Peel.

Although my salary is lower, I have held the line on my health and guarded the warmth of my family. More importantly, I have regained control over my life. That “peace and quiet”—not worrying about the phone ringing every minute—is something money cannot buy.

Reaching middle age is like climbing halfway up a mountain. The Tao taught me not how to climb higher, but how to walk steadier. Those who know contentment find joy; those who know when to stop find peace.

I share this with you all for encouragement.
